Articles of Association

In 1993 ECC adopted Articles of Association and applied for status as a Diocesan Chapel. The Articles were certified by the Bishop and approved at that year’s Diocesan Convention. They define ECC’s status, structure and form of governance.

Articles of Association of the Episcopal Church at Cornell,
a Diocesan Chapel in the Episcopal Diocese of Central New York

Article I
Our Name

The name of this Association shall be the Episcopal Church at Cornell.

Article II
Our Principal Office

The principal office of this Association shall be at Anabel Taylor Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY.

Article III
Our Mission Statement

Grounded in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and surrounded by the life of Cornell University, the Episcopal Church at Cornell exists to raise up and support through study, fellowship, service and worship faithful and creative Christians for the Church’s ministries in the world.

The Episcopal Church at Cornell adheres to the doctrine, discipline and worship of the Episcopal Church in the USA.

Article IV
Our Structure

Our congregation is a Diocesan Chapel as defined by Canon V, Sec. 2 of the Diocese of Central New York. Understandings with the Diocese which interpret and implement this canon for our congregation appear in Article VII. Our annual and special meetings conform to Canon V, Sec. 1 (k) (ii) entitled "Parish Meetings". Members of our congregation are any baptized persons who wish so to declare themselves. All members are qualified voters.

Article V
Our Priest-in-Charge

The Priest-in-Charge shall be called the Episcopal Chaplain to Cornell University. The Chaplain shall be appointed by the Bishop of Central New York after consultation with the Steering Committee and shall serve at the pleasure of the Bishop.

Article VI
Our Coordinating Body

Our coordinating body shall be called the Steering Committee of the Episcopal Church at Cornell. The Steering Committee is responsible for creating and implementing programs. It brings policy and financial decisions which it considers important to the congregation for a vote at an annual or special meeting. It shall consist of nine members of the congregation, at least five of whom shall be students. The term of office for the Steering Committee is two years, five members being elected in the odd years and four in the even. It elects a Chair and Vice-Chair, at least one of which shall be an Episcopalian, annually from among its members. It appoints a treasurer to serve at its pleasure.
The Steering Committee at the time of application to become a Diocesan Chapel is composed of the following members . . . [nine names and addresses listed].

Article VII
Our Understanding with the Diocese

Our unique position as both Diocesan Chapel and Chaplaincy has caused us to arrive at several agreements with the Diocese, which are enumerated below.

  1. Our appropriate connection to the work of the Diocese is through the College Work Commission of the Department of Special Ministries or its successor.
  2. Any financial support from the Diocese will appear as an expense for College Ministries in the Department of Special Ministries or its successor.
  3. Since our most important program is the support of the Cornell Chaplaincy, this Diocesan Chapel, should it become financially independent of the Diocese by raising sufficient endowment, will not be expected to contribute directly to the quota for the Council of the Diocese Fund or its successor. It will make an annual contribution to the Diocese Expense Fund.
  4. We conform to Canon XXII of the Diocese of Central New York, "Of Parish Registers, Parochial Reports and the Removal of Communicants from One Parish to Another", as if we were a parish.
  5. We qualify under Canon III.8.4(e) of the Canons of the General Convention of 1991 as a Congregation not a Parish for the purpose of providing the required certificates for members who are applicants for Holy Orders under Canons III.4, 5 and 6 or 7.

Article VIII
Amendment to these Articles

These articles may be amended or repealed with the consent of the Bishop upon recommendation of the Steering Committee and approval by an annual or special meeting of the congregation.

Bylaws

Bylaws may be hereafter adopted or repealed with the consent of the Bishop upon recommendation of the Steering Committee and approval by an annual or special meeting of the congregation.
